Stowaway Cat Was Accidentally Mailed To California In a Returned Package.
In a bizarre twist of events, a Utah family was overjoyed to be reunited with their adventurous cat after she was mistakenly sent hundreds of miles away to California, nestled among returned items in a package.
Earlier this month, the curious feline named Galena vanished from her home, sparking a community-wide search for the cherished cat. The mystery was solved when an alert Amazon employee discovered her nearly a week later, hiding inside a package that had unwittingly become her tiny travel capsule.
Despite being without food or water for several days, Galeana was in surprisingly good health. “Galeana has always been fascinated by boxes; it’s just her nature,” shared Carrie Clark, Galena’s owner, during an interview with NBC’s Utah affiliate KSL TV.
The discovery occurred when an Amazon employee noticed the cat in a large box that housed several steel-toed boots. The worker immediately brought Galena to a local vet, where her microchip was scanned, revealing Ms. Clark’s contact information. The veterinarian then called to inform the family of Galena’s whereabouts.
Reflecting on the news, Ms. Clark expressed her astonishment, initially doubting the vet’s story, thinking it was a prank. However, reality soon set in, and she and her husband embarked on a journey of over 1,000 miles to California for a heartfelt reunion. “It was an emotional moment. Galena calmed down and snuggled into my arms the second I held her,” Ms. Clark recounted.
Fortuitously, the box had a small opening, allowing Galena access to air, and mild weather conditions during her unintended journey helped ensure she neither froze nor overheated.
BBC reached out to Amazon for their comments on this extraordinary incident.
Ms. Clark, still reeling from the ordeal, emphasized the importance of micro chipping pets. She also humorously advised to “triple-check” Amazon boxes before sending them back—a lesson learned most unexpectedly.
