A Sealed Cardboard Box Of Cats Was Found Dumped

While on a routine walk in Somerset, a dog walker stumbled upon a sealed cardboard box hidden within a hedge near Ilminster. Inside, three cats, clearly terrified, were discovered. The walker immediately took the box to Ferne Animal Sanctuary for care.

A spokesperson from the sanctuary commented on the fortunate timing of the discovery: “These cats were fortunate to be found. Hidden away, they were placed where they might have easily been overlooked, which could have led to a tragic outcome.”

Last week, a dog walker discovered three young cats hidden in a hedgerow well off a public footpath. Nikki Haddock from the sanctuary recounted the incident:

“She found a box of cats drenched in urine.”

The dog walker took the box home, fed the cats, and brought them to the sanctuary for further care.

The sanctuary described the cats as “terrified” and “very neglected,” noting that they were highly underweight and infested with fleas. “Two of the cats are about a year old, and one is possibly two or three years old,” Ms. Haddock explained.

At least one of the young cats is pregnant

She added that none of the cats were micro chipped, and at least one was pregnant. Despite their ordeal, Ms. Haddock noted,

“They’re lovely cats, adorable but clearly deeply traumatized.”

Ms. Haddock observed that despite their ordeal, the cats are “amiable” and appear well-cared for at some point, having “been loved by someone.”

However, she noted the dire circumstances of their discovery:

“Given the condition they were found in, they wouldn’t have lasted much longer.”

The sanctuary, said the cats have been very neglected, are extremely underweight and riddled with fleas

She described the rescue:

“They were found in a box they couldn’t escape from.”

Ms. Haddock expressed bafflement at the actions of those who abandoned the cats, stating,

“I can’t imagine what someone is thinking to believe that’s acceptable.”

She said:

“Thank goodness for the kind-hearted individual who brought these cats to us.”

Ms Haddock said the cats are very friendly, have been well handled and been loved by someone
